1886 Wausau City Directory Excerpts

1886 Wausau Hotels         Mapquest 417 Washington Ave

Joseph married Bertha Harter in Marathon County, Wisconsin on Saturday December 18, 1886.

Joseph and Bertha had their first born child, a son named "Winnie",  born Monday - October 24, 1887 in Bessemer, Michigan.  Winnie was the only child not born in either Wausau or Merrill, Wisconsin.  There is speculation that Joseph was either working or visiting in Bessemer, Michigan at the time.  Note: below Joseph shows up in the the 1888 and 1890 Wausau City Directories as residing in Wausau during those years.

1888 Wausau City Directory

Interesting,  Sister Mary (Maria) is also staying with her brothers.  Mary also left Wausau for Bessemer, Michigan with her brothers and married Bartel Hoffner in Bessemer.

Mapquest Map - 5th and Fulton Streets, Wausau, WI

1890 Wausau City Directory

Looks like the Proft brothers are now staying at 713 Lincoln Ave, Wausau.  Maria is not listed.  Did she go back to the old country?

He was employed as a lumberjack and saw mill hand as seen here while on a lunch break.

Apparently Winnie was well known in Rhinelander. The Rhinelander newspaper published his father Joseph's obituary. They also published obituaries for his brother's Lawrence and Walter.
